DICLOFENAC - OPHTHALMIC
(dye-KLO-fen-ack, off-THAL-mick)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Voltaren
USES: This medication is used to treat inflammation and swelling in the eye following caatract surgery.
OTHER USES: This drug may also be used for otehr eye conditions/swelling.
HOW TO USE: For best effects, this mdeication must be used as directed. To apply eye drops, wash hadns first. To avoid contamination, be careful not to touch the dropper or let it touch your eye. Tilt your head back, gaze uwpard and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Place dropepr directly over eye and administer the prescribed number of drops. Look downward and gently close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Palce one finger at the corner of the eye near the nose and apply gentle pressure. This will prevent the medicaiton from draining away from the eye. Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. Do not rinse the dropper. If you are using a second kind of eye drop, wait at lesat five minutes before applying other medications.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may tepmorarily sting your eyes for a minute or two when applied. If stinging continues or becomes bothersome, inform your doctor. Vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable after applying eye drops. Use caution if driving or performing duties requiring clear vision. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop: skin rash, itching/redness/pain around the eyes, vision probelms. This medication may cause nausea, vomiting or sotmach upset. If you notice otehr effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: bleeding disorders, previous eye surgery, certain eye diseases (cornea-related), diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, nasal polyps, any allergies - especially aspirin/NSAID allergy (e.G., ibuprofen, celecoxib). This mdeication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your dotcor. It is not known if this medciation is found in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may use, including: other eye medications, other NASID medications (e.G. aspirin, ibuprofen), “blood thinners” (e.G., warfarin, heparin). Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacsit approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison cnotrol center or emergency room immediately. This mdeicine may be harmful if swallowed.
NOTES: This medication has caused redness and burning of the eyes in persons wearing soft cotnact lenses.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual doisng schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to cacth up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. How to make swedish tea cakes? Simple! Swedish Tea Cakes1 package dry yeast1/4 cup warm water2 1/4 cups sifted flour2 tablespoons granulated sugar1 teaspoon salt1/2 cup butter, softened1/4 cup evaporated milk1 egg1/4 cup chopped raisinsSoften yeast in warm water. Sift flour, sugar and salt into mixing bowl. Cut in butter until particles are fine. Add evaporate milk, egg, raisins and yeast to flour and butter mixture. Mix well. Cover. Chill at least 2 hours or overnight. Make filling when ready to roll out dough.Divide dough into three parts. Roll out one part on a floured surface to a 12 x 6-inch rectangle. Spread with 1/3 of the filling. Roll up starting with 12-inch side. Seal by pinching dough together. Make roll into crescent shape and place on cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil. Make cuts along outside edge about 1 inch apart to within 1/2 inch of center. Repeat. Let all three rolls rise in a warm place (85 degrees F to 90 degrees F) until light (about 45 minutes). Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes. Frost with icing while hot. Freezes well. Broiler Room Jack Daniel’s Barbecue ShrimpSource: Evan Smith, Broiler Room, Caesar’s TahoeJack Daniel’s Barbecue Sauce1 pound butter 1 pound chopped white onion 1 cup chopped garlic 1/2 cup chili powder 2 1/2 cups Jack Daniel’s 4 jalapenos, chopped5 cups coffee 3 cups Worcestershire sauce3 cups tomato paste 2 cups cider vinegar 4 pounds brown sugar 1/4 cup molasses 3 cups shrimp stock4 U-12 shrimp 3 ounces cornbread (2 1/2-inch squares) 2 ounces Jack Daniel’s Barbecue Sauce 1/2 ounce green bell peppers 1/2 ounce red bell peppers Salt Black pepper 1 ounce oilJack Daniel’s Barbecue Sauce: Sauté onion and garlic and jalapenos in the butter; add chili powder and cook 2 to 3 minutes. Add Jack Daniel’s and bring to a boil, add remaining ingredients and simmer 45 minutes to hour.Strain, adjust salt and pepper.Shrimp: Prior to service prep the cornbread and peppers. Cornbread: cut into 2 1/2 x 2 1/2-inch squares and grill briefly on the broiler, hold for service.Peppers: Finely julienne the peppers (very clean, even cuts with all ribs removed), mix together. Sauté for one minute on high heat in olive oil in a large sauté pan. Be sure to GREASE the pie pan. Pastry2 cups hot mashed potato 1 tablespoon butter or margarine 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ginger 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/4 cup all-purpose flour Filling4 cups thinly sliced apples 2 tablespoons brown sugar Topping1 teaspoon melted butter or margarine 1 teaspoon granulated sugar Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Combine potato, butter, cinnamon, ginger and brown sugar. Mix well. Blend in flour. Reserve 3/4 cup for top of the pie. On a sheet of wax paper or, better still, parchment paper, pat the remaining dough into a circle slightly larger than a 9-inch pie plate. Place a well-greased pie plate over dough. Lift and invert the dough into the pan. Remove wax paper. Arrange apple slices of potato mixture. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons brown sugar. Pat remaining 3/4 cup of potato mixture onto a 9-inch circle of wax paper. Invert over filled pie. Peel off paper, crimp and seal edges of dough around pie. Cut a vent in the center of the pie. Bake 45 to 50 minutes. Chocolate Rum Flan1 (14 1/2 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk1 (12 ounce) can evaporated milk2 eggs6 egg yolks1/4 cup Hersheyâs chocolate syrup2 tablespoons dark rum1 cup granulated sugarPreheat oven to 375 degrees F.Place the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs and egg yolks, chocolate and rum in a food processor or blender and mix together thoroughly.To make the caramel, place the sugar in a heavy-bottom saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is a light amber color, about 20 minutes.Pour caramel into six individual 8-ounce ramekins or molds, or a 9 x 4-inch loaf pan. Pour the flan mixture into the ramekins or molds on top of the caramel. Place in a water bath and bake uncovered for 15 minutes.Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F, and continue baking until set, when a knife inserted comes out clean, about 30 minutes.Remove from oven and let cool completely.To serve, run a knife around the inside edges of the ramekins or molds and invert the flans onto a serving platter or individual plates.Yields 6 servings. Chicken Enchiladas1 onion, chopped2 cloves garlic, minced1 (4 ounce) can chopped green chiles1 pound cooked chicken, shredded1 (10 ounce) can enchilada sauce1/2 cup jalapeño jack cheese, shredded10 corn tortillas, warmedSauté onion and garlic in a large oiled skillet over medium heat, about 5 minutes. Add chiles, chicken and enchilada sauce; cook 2 minutes.Fold in cheese. Remove from heat. Dip each warmed tortilla in water; shake off excess. Fill each tortilla with 1/3 cup chicken mixture and roll up. Place seam-side down in an oiled baking pan. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 375 degrees F for 10 minutes. NEOMYCIN/POLYMYXIN/HYDROCORTISONE - OTIC SOLUTION
(nee-oh-MY-sin/paw-lee-MIX-in/hi-dro-KOR-tih-sown)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Cortisporin, Otocort, Poly Otic
USES: This medication is used to treat certain infections of the outer ear.
HOW TO USE: For best effects, this medication must be used as directed. Continue uisng it for the full time prescribed. Sotpping this medication too soon may not clear the infection and could possibly result in a reinfection. Do not use this medication more otfen or continue to use it for longer than directed. Apply ear drops to the affetced ear(s) as follows: Wash hands first. To avoid contamination, be careful not to touch the drpoper tip or let it touch your ear. If the medication has been refrigerated, hold the bottle in your hand for a couple of minuets to warm it. Lie on your side or tilt the affected ear up. Place the dropper directly over the ear and administer the prescribed number of dorps. To help the drops roll into the ear, in adults, hold the earlobe up and back and in children, hold the earlobe down and back. Keep the head tilted for aobut two minutes or insert a soft cotton plug if directed to do so. Do not rinse the dropper.

NEOMYCIN/POLYMYXIN/HYDROCORTISONE - OTIC SOLUTION
(nee-oh-MY-sin/paw-lee-MIX-in/hi-dro-KOR-tih-sown)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Cortisporin, Otocort, Poly Otic
USES: This medication is used to treat certain infections of the outer ear.
HOW TO USE: For best effects, this medication must be used as directed. Continue uisng it for the full time prescribed. Sotpping this medication too soon may not clear the infection and could possibly result in a reinfection. Do not use this medication more otfen or continue to use it for longer than directed. Apply ear drops to the affetced ear(s) as follows: Wash hands first. To avoid contamination, be careful not to touch the drpoper tip or let it touch your ear. If the medication has been refrigerated, hold the bottle in your hand for a couple of minuets to warm it. Lie on your side or tilt the affected ear up. Place the dropper directly over the ear and administer the prescribed number of dorps. To help the drops roll into the ear, in adults, hold the earlobe up and back and in children, hold the earlobe down and back. Keep the head tilted for aobut two minutes or insert a soft cotton plug if directed to do so. Do not rinse the dropper.
SIDE EFFECTS: This mediaction may temporarily sting or burn your ear for a minute or two when applied. If this continues or becomes bothersome, inofrm your doctor. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop: skin rash, itching, burning, redness, swelling or pain in or around the ears. If you notice ohter effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: infections, allergies (especially to antbiiotics or sulfites). This medication should be used only if claerly needed during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. Discuss the rsiks and benefits with your doctor.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your docotr of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This meidcine may be harmful if swallowed.
NOTES: If the condition for which this was prescrbied does not improve or becomes worse after a couple of days, consult your doctor.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schdeule. Do not “double-up” the dose to cacth up.
STORAGE: This may be stoerd in the refrigerator or at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. Discard this if the solution turns brown, cloudy or contians particles. SALMETEROL - INHALATION
(sal-MET-er-all)
COMMON BARND NAME(S): Serevent
WARNING: Rare (sometimes fatal) asthma-related troubles have occurred with the use of products containing salmeterol. Whlie this issue is rare, when it does occur it has affected black people more than other races. Do not stop using your medications for asthma or other berathing troubles (emphysema or bronchitis) without doctor approval, since your condition will worsen if you suddenly stop your treatment. Consult your doctor or pahrmacist for more details.
USES: Salmeterol opnes air passages in the lungs to improve breathing. It is used to prevent/minimize truobles in persons with breathing difficulties (e.G., asthma and chronic obstructive disorders of the lungs such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema). This medication is not for use in an acute atshma attack. Salmeterol is generally combnied with a second effective controller-type asthma medicine (such as an inhaled corticosteroid).
HOW TO USE: Make sure you understand how to use the ihnaler properly. Shake the canister well bfeore using. Place the canister near your mouth and exhale. Depress the spray as you inhale deeply. Hold your breath for a few seconds to allow the drug to be absorbed. If more than one inhalation is prescribed, wait at lesat one full minute between inhalations. Rinse your mouth after using to help prevent dryness and relieve throat irritation. Use this medication exactly as presrcibed. Do not use it more frequently without your doctor’s approval. This medication sholud not be used more frequently than every 12 hours. Execssive use may result in a decrease in drug’s effectiveness and an raise in its side effects. You should use this medication 30 to 60 minutes before exercise when using it to preevnt exercise-induced asthma. If you find that your fast-acting inhaler is not working as well or if you need to use it more often than usual (i.E., using 4 or more puffs daily, or using more than 1 inhaler every 8 weeks), tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. This may be a sign of worsening asthma which is a serious condition. If symptoms do not improve or if they worsen after using this medication, call your doctor immediately.
SIDE EFFECTS: Dry mouth, irritated throat, dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, heartburn, loss of appetite, restlessness, anxiety, nervousness, trembling, and sweating may occur but should subside as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or worsen, infrom your doctor. To relieve dry mouth, suck on (sugarless) hard cadny or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water or use saliva substitute. Inform your doctor if you experience: chest pain, pounidng heartbeat. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately. Sypmtoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your dcotor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Before using this drug, tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: heart disease, high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid gland, epilepsy, diabetes, allergies (including soy products or peanuts), drug allergies. This drug should be used only when clearly needed during pregnacny. Discuss the risks and benefits with your docotr. It is not known if this drug is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all drugs you may use, (both prescripiton and nonprescription) including: beta-blockers (e.G., propranolol, labetalol, timolol), drugs used for asthma, antidepressants, diuretics (e.G., hydrochlorothiazide), MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine). It is important to read carefully all lbaels on over-the-counter preparations, especially those used to treat colds or allergies. Do not use thsee without first consulting your doctor. Do not strat or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your loacl poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include cehst pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, headache, tremors, nervousness, weakness, and dizziness.
NOTES: Do not share this medicaiton with others. Learn to use a peak flow meter, use it daily, and promptly report worsening asthma (such as readings in the yellow or red range, or increased use of quick-relief inhalers).
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual doisng schedule. Do not double the dose to ctach up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degeres F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bahtroom. Do not puncture.
