It’s a hillbilly hoedown! Over the hill from Tobacco Road lies “Tobacco Roody” (84 min.), where folks spend their lives liquored-up and makin’ love. Moonshiner Mose Mason plays giddy-up with his platinum-blonde niece, Tootie, while Southern belles Lulu-Mae and Carolina go skinny-dippin’ in the creek before climbing into each other’s arms. Meanwhile Mose’s wife takes care of a snoopin’ sheriff right on the kitchen table, then settles late mortgage payments with the landlord by playin’ peek-a-boo in the back of his van. Finally three dimwitted farm boys with a truck full of loco weed stop by to sample Mose’s white lightning, then his darling daughters! Yeee-haaaahhh! Plus, a Backwoods Beauty Contest is just one of the “Southern Comforts” (80 min.) a flesh-peddlin’ con artist offers customers when he sets up shop in the barn of an ol’ coot known as The Colonel and his idiot son, Junior. Of course, it all turns into one big barnyard orgy which even the local sheriff finds mighty interestin’. Two screwy, sex-crazed slices of rural Americana direct from drive-in king Harry Novak. And remember, the code of the hills is Love Thy Neighbor!

The charms of DVD sometimes passeth understanding. Vengeance Valley is an 83-minute B Western directed (barely) by the dullest of MGM hacks, Richard Thorpe, and based on one of the genre’s hoariest formulas–the bad natural son (Robert Walker), the good foster son (Burt Lancaster), and the range empire they respectively imperil and rescue. Everyone on board was marking time: Walker, who otherwise spent 1951 playing Bruno Anthony in Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train, and who would be dead within the year; Lancaster, whose glum performance hints at neither the gusto of his early-’50s swashbucklers nor the fact that he would soon be collecting Oscar nominations; Joanne Dru (playing Walker’s recent bride), who only a year earlier was working for John Ford; and screenwriter Irving Ravetch, who would draw a much more auspicious ranch-land assignment a decade later with Hud (1963). No, we can’t make exalted claims for Vengeance Valley–but that’s just the point: this is an absolutely typical slice of moviegoing life in 1951, and watching this DVD is as uncanny as a trip in a time machine. The aura is perfected by the true three-strip Technicolor print, not a latterday Eastmancolor approximation of the real thing. Throw in a supporting cast of such sagebrush perennials as John Ireland, Will Wright, Glenn Strange, Jim Hayward, and TV’s Wyatt Earp-to-be, Hugh O’Brian, and you’ve got a quintessential Saturday at the Bijou. While vacationing Down Under, the mystery-solving quintet decides to head into the Australian outback to take in the sights and a rock festival competition held at Vampire Rock. But, of course, that is not to be. “Vampires” have been swooping down from the craggy cliffs and abducting the talent, forcing the detectives to go undercover as a rock band. (Their song? Predictably, “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?”) The aboriginal myth of Yowie Yahoo is thrown in, along with two aboriginal characters. Adults may have trouble keeping the glam-rock musicians separate from the vampires, but kids will follow enough of the complex plot and high-tech resolution. This 70-minute movie is a contemporary take on the vintage television series with Casey Kasem repeating the honors as the voice of Shaggy. Sarah (a teenage Jennifer Connelly) rehearses the role of a fairy-tale queen, performing for her stuffed animals. She is about to discover that the time has come to leave her childhood behind. Her petulance leads her to call the goblins to take the baby away, but when they actually do, she realizes her responsibility to rescue him. Sarah negotiates the Labyrinth to reach the City of the Goblins and the castle of their king. The king is the only other human in the film and is played by a glam-rocking David Bowie, who performs five of his songs. The rest of the cast are puppets, a wonderful array of Jim Henson’s imaginative masterpieces. Henson gives credit to children’s author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, and the creatures in the movie will remind Sendak fans of his drawings. The castle of the king is a living M.C. Escher set that adults will enjoy. The film combines the highest standards of art, costume, and set decoration. Like executive producer George Lucas’s other fantasies, Labyrinth mixes adventure with lessons about growing up. –Lloyd Chesley
