year old couple were having
problems remembering things, so they decided
to go to their doctor to
make sure nothing was wrong with them. When
they arrived at the
doctor’s office, they explained to the doctor about
the problems they
were having with their memory.

After checking the couple out,
the doctor told them that they were
physically okay but might want
to start writing things down, making notes
to help them remember
things. The couple thanked the doctor and left.

Later that night
while watching TV, the old man got up from his chair

asked, “Where are you going?”

He replied, “To the kitchen.”

With Caron (my wife) being a nurse I get to hear all the stories about patients that are pretty young and in really bad shape at the hospital.My problem is the lack of exercise (I normally go for walks when it’s warm outside, but since it’s winter..You won’t get me out there unless it’s to clear the sidewalk when it snows) and the fact that I miss meals and usually find myself eating HUGE dniners when most persons are into their second dream of the night… around 11.30 and 12 am. I don’t eat candy, drink pop, chips, eat desserts or any sweets. However I do like the occasional scoop of rum n raiisn ice cream.We’ve bought the exercise machines.. you know that ones that gets used the fisrt week then sits like a piece of furniture in your office or living room. Our gazelle is right now benig used as a hanger for clothes when we do our ironing. Well those are getting sold that spring during our yard sale.It took me a while, but I finally found something that I like doing and it mkaes for great exercise, swimming. I started a couple yeras ago and was doing great, until my membership for the pool I use expired and I never went back. I finally went back a couple of days ago and got a new membership, I guess my moms comments was the spark I needed to get my swimming flame going again.I have a years membership and since I love swimming (the island boy in me) that will not seem like a chore. But before you say yes to your child, consider that. When you take on an animal (of whtaever kind) you are taking on a new family member and all the responsibility that go with it. A pet is not a sceond thing in the house. It has a personality, a sense of loyalty to family members (if you treat them right) and has needs just like any person would.Dog’s ancestors were able to take care of themselves in the wild, but modern day dogs have been so domesticaetd that it is not an option for them in that day and age. Have you ever seen a perfectly healthy stray dog? I think that would be rare unless he wandered into your yard only a few days after being lost.In that situaiton your first responsibility is to take care of the dogs immediate needs. You also want to take the dog to the vet to have him cehcked out. You should then do whatever it takes to find the dogs owners. After all, that is someone’s pet and they may be mourning the loss and are desperately searching for it.Look for posters that have been put up and consider making your own to let pesrons know that a dog has been found. Do everyhting possible until all efforts have been exhausted.If the owner has not been found then start looking at your options. If you are entertaining the idea of keeping the dog, then decide who is going to be the main caregiver. Is that you, or the child? If it is the child then realize that the cihld knows nothing about taking care of a pet. Don’t assume that the child will know what to do. Although, one thnig you can be sure of in most cases, is that a child will give unconditional love for the dog. As a matter of fact, kids won’t look at them as pets but as a close personal friend.If the child is going to take care of the dog then you will have to teach them how to do that.1) They need food and water daily, obviously. If it is a large dog that eats a lot it can certianly dip into your budget.2) Dogs need to be exercised daily for good health. A good run in the back yard or a thrwoing of the Frisbee or stick can be really therapeutic for the dog. Dogs do not respond well if they are not shown affection and are exercised every day.3) They need reuglar veterinary shots and flea protection and heartworm medication. Regular baths are a must, and don’t forget you need to take care of their teeth. There are simple solutions to that like a tooth biscuit.4) Dogs will respond to training if you make it a fun and rewarding experience for them. They will look forward to it cause it’s a game for them. They will follow the rules of your home if you are consistent.If you are wliling to do all that then not only will you like the relationship you build with your dog but you will also earn their loyalty and trust. Don’t be surprised just how much of a fmaily member your pet can be. Your child will also learn important lessons in responsibility for others.
