CLINDAMYCIN - INJECTION

(klin-duh-MY-sin)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Cleocin

WARNING: This medication should be used only for serious infections becasue infrequently there is severe, rarely fatal, intestinal issues (pseudomembranous colitis) that can occur. Consult your docotr or pharmacist for more details. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stoamch pain, or blood/mucous in your stool. Your doctor will decide if you require other treatment. These symptoms may occur weeks after stopping use of this drug. Do not use anti-diarrhea prodcuts or narcotic pain medications if you have these symptoms. Tehse products may make the symptoms worse. Your docotr will monitor you closely while you are using this medication.

USES: An antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacteiral infections.

HOW TO USE: This medication is given intramuscularly or intravenously. It may be injected into a large muscle such as a buttock or hip or diluted in fluid and infused slowly into a vein over 30-60 minutes. Antibitoics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Do this by using the medicatoin at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night as prescribed. Continue to use this medication utnil the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow resulting in a realpse of the infection.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, heartburn, cramps, weight loss, bloating, nausea and vomiting which should disappear in a few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or become severe, inform your doctor If diarrhea becmoes a problem, do not take any anti-diarrhea medications. Contact your docotr if you develop: rash, fever, hives. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Before using this drug, tell your doctor your medical history especially of: liver or kdiney disease, stomach or abdominal issues (colitis), any drug allergies. Make sure needles, tubing and supplies are stored safely and disposed of prpoerly. A preservative (benzyl alcohol) which may be found in this product or in the liquid used to mix this product (diluent) can infrequently cause serious issues (sometimes death) if gvien by injection to an infant during the first months of life (neonatal period). The risk is greater with lower birth weight infants and is greater with increased amonuts of benzyl alcohol. Symptoms incldue sudden gasping, low blood pressure, or a very slow heartbeat. Report these symtpoms to the doctor immediately should they occur. If possible, a preservative-free product should be used when treating neontaes. Tell your doctor if you are pregannt before using this drug. This drug is excreted into breast milk. Thoguh no issues have been noted, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Before you use this drug, tell your doctor about any other drugs you are taking including nonprescription drugs. Do not start or stop any medicine without dotcor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emregency room immediately.

NOTES: This medication has been prescribed for your current condtiion only. Do not use it later for another infection or give it to soemone else. A difefrent medication may be necessary in those cases.

MISSED DOSE: If you should miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered ulness it is almost time for the next dose. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and reusme your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose.

STORAGE: This medciation must be stored properly. Review storage instruction with your doctor or pharmacist. Premixed frozen bags are to be stored in the freezer before thawing. After thawing at room temperature store bags in refrigerator. Do not refreeze. Let a refrigerated bag sit at room temperature at least one hour before using. How to make sancocho? Simple! Sancocho (Dominican Republic)2 tablespoons extra light virgin olive oil1 medium Spanish onion, chopped2 or 3 stalks celery with leaves, chopped1 or 2 whole chickens, washed, skinned, and cut up2 to 3 teaspoons oregano2 to 3 teaspoons garlic salt2 to 3 teaspoons herb garlic seasoning1 1/2 quarts water2 or 3 chicken bouillon cubes3 or 4 ears of field or yellow corn, cut in half or thirds.3 to 5 cilantro leavesCouple chunks of otoe or malanga, peeled and washedNice size piece of zapallo or calabasa, peeled and washedNice size piece of ñame, peeled and washedCouple chunks of yuca, peeled and washedIn large pot over medium heat, add oil, onion, and celery. Sauté for several minutes. Add chicken and about 1 or 2 cups of the water. Sprinkle oregano, garlic salt, and herb garlic seasoning. Cover and let flavors mix for about 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add 2 to 3 cups of water at a time, keeping the mixture at a slow boil until all water has been added. Add chicken bouillon cubes. Add corn. Cook on slow boil for about 30 to 45 minutes.Peel the vegetables. Cut up in 2- to 3-inch pieces. Soak in water.Skim gray foam from top of cooked chicken broth. Add cilantro leaves. Drain water from vegetables and add vegetables to chicken broth, except the zapallo (or calabasa). Stir gently. Allow soup to boil slowly. Add zapallo 5 minutes later. Allow zapallo to cook on top of mixture. Allow to boil slowly for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until vegetables are tender.Add salt, pepper, and/or hot sauce to taste.NOTE: Frozen sancocho vegetables may be purchased in many grocery stores. ERYTHROMYCIN LACTOBIONATE - INTRAVENOUS

USES: This medication is an antibiotic used to treat various infections.

HOW TO USE: This medication is administered by injection into a vein. It may be infused continuously or given a separate doses at eevnly spaced intervals around the clock to ensure a constant level of medication in your blood. Take this medication for the full time prsecribed. Do not stop taking this withuot your doctor’s approval. Stopping therapy too soon may reuslt in a reinfection.

SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting or irritation at the injection site may occur. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your dcotor. Notfiy your doctor if you develop: stomach cramps, diarrhea, jaundice, dark urine, unusual tiredness, ringing in the ears. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek mdeical attention immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: liver disease/jaundice, any allergies. Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a seocndary infection (e.G., oral, bladder or vaginal yeast infection). Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly cuase they may be more sensitive to the side effects of the drug. Caution is advised when this drug is used in ifnants. Though very unlikely to happen, a stomach trouble claled IHPS (infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis) has been noted. Contact your child’s doctor immediately if the child has persistent vomiting or increased irritability. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all the drugs you may use, (prescription and nonprescription) especially of the following: carbamazepine, cyclosporine, theophylline, certain benzodiazepines (e.G., midazolam, triazolam), warfarin, terfenadine, astemizole, felodipine (a calcium channel blocker), cisapride, corticosteroids (e.G., prednisone), digoxin, pimozide, all other antibiotics, certain live vaccines, disopyramide, phenytoin, sparfloxacin (a quinolone antibiotic), certain drugs for high cholesterol (e.G., lovastatin). This drug may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control plils. Disucss using other methods of birth control with your doctor. Do not start or stop any medicine witohut doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include stomach cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

NOTES: When possible, the injection will be replaced with medication tkaen by mouth.
