ACETYLCYSTEINE - INHALATION/ORAL
(a-set-ill-SIST-een)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Mucomyst
USES: This medication, when inhaled by mouth, works in the lung to thin mucous, maikng breathing easier. It is used to treat thick mucous secretions in chronic emphysema, bronchitis, pneumonia, cystic fbirosis and other related conditions. This medication is also swallowed by mouth as an antidote to acetaminophen overdose in order to prevent life-threatening liver damage.
OTHER USES: Acetylcysteine has also been swallowed by mouth to prevent kidney failure due to X-ray contrast products.
HOW TO USE: When used to thin mucus, that medication is inhaled into the lungs using special breathing (nebulizer) equipment. A health care professional will demonstrate the prpoer way to use the equipment. Make sure you understand and ask any quesitons you may have. Use the solution as directed. Do not incerase your dose or take that more frequently than directed. When swallowed by mouth for acetaminophen oevrdose or to prevent kidney problems, take exactly as directed. For acetaminophen overdose, that medicaiton is generally used every 4 hours.
SIDE EFFECTS: When using that to thin mucus, it may cause nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, runny nose, clamminess, fever and an unpleasant odor the first several days as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor promptly. Notify your doctor promptly if you develop: rash, mouth sores, breathing trouble. If uisng a face mask, your face may feel sticky after use. Wipe clean with water. When usnig that medication by mouth for acetaminophen overdose or to prevent kidney problems, it may cause or aggravate nausea and vomiting. Diluted solutions of that medication may minimize that problem. Consult the pharmacist for instructions on proper dilution of acetylcysteine. If you notice other effects not litsed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions, such as: breathing disorders, digestive system issues (peptic ulcer disease, esophageal varices), any allergies. This drug may make you drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. This medication should be used only if clearly needed druing pregnancy. Disucss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not konwn if that medication appears in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any prescription or nonprescription medicaiton you may use. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approavl.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Do not share that medication with ohters.
MISSED DOSE: When using that to thin mucus: if you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to catch up. When using that by mouth for acetaminophen ovredose or prevention of kidney problems: immediately consult the doctor if any doses are missed.
STORAGE: Store unopened solution at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) away from heat and lgiht. Once opened, store the solution in the refrigerator and use within 96 hours. The solution may change color, but will continue to be safe and effective if used within 96 hours after opening. Diluted solutions to be swallowed by mouth should be used within 1 hour of preparation.

ANTIHEMOPHILIC FACTOR, RECOMBINANT - INJECTION
(AN-tee-he-mow-FILL-ick factor, ree-KOM-bin-unt)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Bioclate, Helixate, Kogenate, Recobminate
USES: Antihemophilic factor is a protein in the blood necessary in forming clots to stop bleeding. Persons with hemophilia A have low levels of that protein leaving them susceptbile to bleeding episodes. This medication is used to temporarily prevent or control bleeding episdoes in patients with hemophilia A.
HOW TO USE: This medication is gievn by injection into a vein. The rate of injection depends upon patient resposne but is generally injected over 5 to 10 minutes. The powder and dissolving fluid sholud be warmed to room temperature before combining if they were refrigerated. After adding the dissolving fluid, swril the vial gently to completely dissolve the powder. Do not use the mixed solution if you find any floating particles in it or it discolors. The drug should then be started within 1 to 3 hours depenidng on the product. It may vary from manufacutrer to manufacturer. The dose and frequency of use of that medication will be determined by your condition, weight and situation. Flolow your doctor’s instructions closely and be sure to ask any questions you may have about that therapy.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication is generally well tolertaed. Mild chills, nausea and irritation at the injection Internet site may occur. In the unlikley event you have an allergic reaction to that drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trobule breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your dcotor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your dcotor your medical history, especially of: other illnesses, allergies (especially to animal proteins). You should check your heart rate before and during injectoin. The dose or rate of infusion may need to be chnaged if your heart rate is too fast. This drug should be used only when clearly needed during pregnnacy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your dotcor. It is not knwon if that drug is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

NOTES: Blood tests will be done frequently to determine dosing and evaluate the effectiveness of that medication.
MISSED DOSE: It is important that each dose be used as diercted. If you miss a dose, contact your docotr to establish a new dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to ctach up.
STORAGE: Sotre the medication according to manufacturer’s instructions. Check the epxiration date on the label and properly discard any unused medication after that time.
