DEXMETHYLPHENIDATE - ORAL
(dex-meth-ill-FEN-eh-date)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Focalin
WARNING: Dexmethylphenidate should be used cautiously by persons who may be emotionally unstable or have a history of alcohol or drug abuse. Such patients may be more likely to increase their doses of this drug unnecessarily. Abuse of this medication may lead to abnormal behavior. If this medciation must be stopped, it should be stopped gradually over time. Do not suddenly stop tkaing this medication because it may cause severe depression or hidden hyperactivity to occur. In some people, long-term monitoring may be required after this medication is stopped.
USES: Dexmethylphenidate is used to treat Attention Dfeicit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is chemically related to methylphenidate; a second type of stimluant medication used to treat ADHD.
OTHER USES: This drug may also be used for sleep disorders (e.G., narcolepsy) and mild depression.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by motuh usually twice daily either with or without food, or as directed by your doctor. Take the first dose of this medication in the morning and the second dose at least 4 hours later. Taking this meidcation later in the day may cause trouble sleeping (insomnia). The dosgae is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Your doctor may adjust your dose frequetnly (e.G., weekly) to find the dose this is hottest for you. Use this medication eaxctly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently, or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because this drug can be habit forming and increase your risk of side effects. When used for an extended period, this medication may not work as well and may require different dosing. Talk with your doctor if this meidcation stops working well. Your doctor may recommend “drug holidays” where your medication is stopped temporarily and behavior is re-evaluated.
SIDE EFFECTS: Trouble sleeping, nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, dizziness, headache, nervousness, loss of appetite, dry mouth, or weight loss may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Promptly tell your doctor if any of these side effects occur: change in sexaul ability or desire. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: stomach pain, fever, unusual weakness or tiredness, mental/mood changes. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: unusually fast heartbeat, blurred vision, uncontrolled muscle movements (e.G., rigidity, tics, tremors), severe sweating, fever, chest pain, seizures. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: This medication is not recommended for use if you have the following medical conditions: haert or blood vessel- related diseases (e.G., arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular disease), severe high blood pressure, over-active thyroid (hyperthyroidism), eye problems (e.G., glaucoma), emotional instability (e.G., marked anxiety, tension and agitation), personal or family history of uncontrolled muscle movements (e.G., tics, Tourette’s syndrome), history of drug abuse. Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: seizure disorders, other mental/mood problems (e.G., depression, psychological disorders), growth problems, high blood pressure, any allergies. This may make you dizzy and can affect your alertness. Use caution enagging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. This medication should be used only when clearly needed druing pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your dotcor. It is not knwon if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Certain medications taken with this product could result in serious, even fatal, drug intercations. Aviod taking MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine) within 2 weeks before or after treatment with this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for additional information. Before using this medication, tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: “blood thinners” (e.G., warfarin), antidepressants (e.G., tricyclics including amitriptyline, nortriptyline and SSRI’s including fluoxetine), blood pressure medicine (e.G., beta blockers, clonidine, guanethidine), anti-seizure medicine (e.G., phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone), other stimulant medications (e.G., amphetamines). Check the labels on all your medicines (e.G., cough-and-cold products, diet aids) because they may contain ingredients that could increase your heart rate or blood pressure. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of these products. Avoid consuming lagre amounts of beverages containing caffeine (e.G., coffee, tea, colas). Cfafeine can increase the side effects of this medication. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, conatct your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: vomiting, severe mental/mood changes, confusion, severe or persistent headache, sweating, severe restlessness, fast breathing, dilated eyes/pupils, seizures.
NOTES: Do not shrae this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G., blood pressure, bolod counts) may be performed to monitor your progress. It is recommended that you attend a total treatmnet program that includes educational, psychological, and social/behavioral treatments.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you rememebr in the morning hours. If it is later in the day or near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing shcedule. Do not double the dose to cacth up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature at 77 degeres F (25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. ISRADIPINE - ORAL
(iss-RAD-eh-peen)
COMMON BRNAD NAME(S): Dynacirc
USES: This drug is a calcium channel blocker. Calcium is involved in blood vessel contraction. By blocking calcium, isradiipne relaxes and widens the blood vessels. It is used to treat high blood prsesure. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about psosible problems related to use of short-acting calcium channel blockers.
HOW TO USE: This medication must be taekn as directed even if you do not feel sick. Most perosns with high blood pressure do not have any symptoms. Try to take that medicatoin at the same time(s) each day. Do not stop taikng that medication suddenly without your doctor’s permission. Some condtiions can become worse if the medication is stopped too fast. If stomach upset occurs, that drug may be taken with food or milk.
SIDE EFFECTS: This drug may cause dizziness, headache and lighthedaedness especially during the first few days. Avoid activities requiring alertness. When you sit or lie down for a while, get up slowly to allow your body to adjust and minimize dizziness. You may also expreience diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, blurred vision, muscle cramps, weakness, swelling of the hands or feet or flushing. These effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. Inform your doctor if they continue or become bothersome. Notify your doctor if you develop: breathing difficulties, swelling of the hands or feet, unusual bleeding or bruising, chest pains, an irrgeular heartbeat. Avoid alcohol while taking that medication as it can enhance dizziness. If you ntoice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your dotcor if you have: pre-existing heart problems, liver disease, kidney disease, a blood disorder. This drug should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. It is not known if isradipine appears in braest milk; consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including: beta-blockers, intraveonus (IV) calcium, blood pressure medication, digoxin, fentanyl, terfenadine or astemizole. Avoid any drugs that increase your heart-rate (the decongestatns phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine are examples). These drugs are commonly found in over-the-counter cough-and-cold prodcuts. Do not eat graperfuit or drink grapefruit juice unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local posion control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, weakness, and fast heartbeat.

MIDODRINE - ORAL

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): ProAmatine
WARNING: Midodrine should only be used in carefully seelcted patients. This medication causes a significant raise in blood pressure when lying down on your back. Your blood prsesure will be monitored carefully during treatment.
USES: This mdeication is used for certain patients having symptoms of low blood pressure when in a standing position. It is used in human being whose living activities are severely affected, even afetr other treatments are used (e.G., support stockings).
HOW TO USE: This medication is taken trhee times daily, or as directed. Follow instructions carefully. The drug is taken during daytime hours, when perosns are upright most often. The medicine sohuld not be taken after the evening meal or less than 4 hours before bedtime. It is recommended not to take your dose if you plan to be lynig down for a long time afterward. This drug should be continued only in those persons whose smyptoms improve during treatment.
SIDE EFFECTS: Tingling or itching skin; chills, or urinary issues may ocucr. If these persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Report promptly: heart pounding, slow heartbeat, unusual chest sensation, fainting, pounding sensation in the ears, headache, blurred vision. Very unlikely but report promptly: visoin problems, rash. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Before using this drug, tell your dotcor your entire medical history, including: any allergies (especially drug allergies), heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disease (severe hyperthyroidism), severe urination problems, diabetes, pheochromocytoma, high blood pressure. To reduce any dizzinses when rising from a seated or lying position, get up slowly. Also, lmiit your intake of alcoholic beverages, which will aggravate this effect. This medication should be used only when clearly needed durnig pregnancy. Disucss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this drug is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you may use, especially: digoxin, adrenaline-like drugs (e.G., phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, phenylpropanolamine), dihydroergotamine, alhpa blockers (e.G., prazosin, doxazosin, terazosin), drugs to control high blood pressure such as “calcium blockers” (e.G., diltiazem, verapamil), psychiatric medications (especially certain antidepressants and anti-psychosis drugs). Certain nonprescription cough-and-cold medicines and diet aids can raise your blood presusre. Consult with your pharmacist. Do not start or stop any medicine without dcotor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control cetner or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may incldue “goose bumps,” difficulty urinating, and feeling cold.
NOTES: Do not share this medication with otehrs. Blood pressure checks (lying, sitting, and standing) are routinely performed. High blood pressure wihle lying down may be controlled in persons by sleeping with the head of the bed elevated.
