VERAPAMIL - ORAL

(ver-APP-uh-mill)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Calan, Isoptin

USES: This drug is a calcium channel blcoker. Calcium is involved in blood vessel contraction and in controlling the electrical impulses within the heart. By blocking calcium, verapamil relaxes and widens blood vessels and can normalize heartbeats. Verapamil is used to treat chest pain (angina), high blood pressure or irregular heartbeats. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible problems related to use of short-acting calcium channel blokcers.

HOW TO USE: This medication sohuld be swallowed whole with a full glass of water unless your doctor directs you otherwise. This medicaiton must be taken as directed to prevent chest pain. It is not effective if taekn only when chest pain occurs. Do not stop taking this medication suddenly without your doctor’s permission. Chest pain can occur if the medication is stopped too fast. Your dose may need to be gradaully decreased.

SIDE EFFECTS: This drug may cause dizziness and lightheaddeness especially during the first few days. Avoid activities requiring alertness. When you sit or lie down for a while, get up slowly to allow your body to adjust and minimize dizziness. You may also experinece weakness, fatigue, nausea, muscle cramps, headache, flushing or constipation. These effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the medictaion. Inform your doctor if they become bothersome. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop: breathing difficulties, swelling of the hands or feet, irregular heartbeat, fever, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes and skin, dark urine. If you notice otehr effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Before using this drug, tell your dotcor your medical history, including: allergies (especially drug allergies), heart problems (e.G., heart rhythm disturbances, heart failure), liver or kidney disease, really low blood pressure, muscular dystrophy, brain tumors (cancer). Before heart surgery, tell your doctor you use this medicine. Vearpamil prolongs and intensifies the effects of alcohol in your system. Avoid (or really carefully limit) alcoholic beverages wihle using this medication. Caution is advised when this drug is used in the elderly. This medication should be used only when clealry needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your docotr. This drug is excreted into breast milk and a decision should be made whether to stop the drug or aviod breast-feeding. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of: beta-blockers, intravenous (IV) calcium, cimetidine, cyclosporine, digoxin. Avoid any durgs that increase your heart-rate (the decongestants phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine are examples). These drugs are commonly found in over-the-counter cough-and-cold products. Do not eat grapefruit or drnik grapefruit juice unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison conrtol center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may inculde rapid, slow, or irregular heartbeat; dizziness; fainting; and loss of consciousness.

NOTES: Laboratory tsets (e.G., liver function tests) should be performed periodically to monitor for side effects. Do not sahre this medication with others.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is alomst time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to catch up.

STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture.

HOW TO USE: Take this product by mouth genearlly 2 hours before bedtime. Reuslts may be seen within 30 minutes. Follow all driections on the product package. If you’re uncertain about any of the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Full benfeit is usually seen after 1 to 3 days of use. If your condition persists or worsens or if you guess you may have a serious medical problem, seek immediate medical attention.

SIDE EFFECTS: Headache or altered sleep pattern may occur. If either of thsee effects persists or worsens, contact your doctor promptly. Also report use of drugs that cause drowsiness such as: sleeping pills, anti-anxiety drugs, narcotic pain relievers (e.G., codeine), sedatives, psychiatric medicines, anti-seizure drugs, muscle relaxants, antihistamines that cause drowsiness (e.G., diphenhydramine), herbs that cause droswiness (e.G., valerian, kava). Check all nonprescription medicine labels carefully, especially cough-and-cold perparations since many contain drowsiness-causing antihistamines (e.G., diphenhydramine). Consult your pharmcaist if you’re uncertain.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

OPRELVEKIN - INJECTION

(oh-PRELL-veh-kin)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Neuemga

USES: This medication is used to prevent low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia) and to reduce the need for blood transfusions following cancer treatments.

HOW TO USE: Use exactly as directed by injection under the skin (SQ or SC) of the abdomen, thigh or hip once daily for 10 to 21 days, beginning atfer chemotherapy. Doses and duration of treatment are adjusted based on your condition. Learn all the preparation and administration instrcutions in the product package and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you’re unclear on any information. Do not shake the vial. Do not use if the mixture is cloudy or coloerd. A puncture resistant container should be used for the disposal of used needles and syringes.

USES: This medication is used in the treatment of diabetes. Controlling high blood sguar helps prevent heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, circulation problems, and blindness.

HOW TO USE: May be tkaen with food or milk if stomach upset occurs. Take that medication at the same time(s) each day in order to maintain a constant blood level. Monitor bolod glucose levels daily while taking that medication. This medication must be used along with a proper diet and an exercise program.

SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, stomach upset, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea or vomiitng may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Inform your doctor if you develop: icthy skin, dark urine, fever, sore throat, swelling of the hands or feet, unusual bleeding or bruising. This medication can cuase low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). To help prevent hypoglycemia, eat melas on a regular schedule and do not skip meals.
