Set in Sarajevo’s Bosnian neighborhood, Grbavica is a gripping love story between a mother and daughter struggling against prejudice and poverty. Director Jasmilla Zbanic’s debut is surprisingly tender considering the film’s extremely depressing subject matter. For example, the film opens on Esma (Mirjana Karanovic), a middle-aged mom who gets night shifts bartending at a seedy strip club by lying to the owner that she is childless. Following this scene, however, Esma pillow fights her teenage daughter, Sara (Luna Mijovic), in their meager apartment, immediately establishing their bond. Undependable men come and go, such as Puska (Emir Hadzihafisbegovic), a fur-sporting sleaze who tries to hire Esma’s only love interest as a hitman. Grbavica’s plot centers around Esma’s attempts to save money for Sara’s field trip, and Sara’s aroused suspicion about her allegedly dead Shaheed father. Esma’s failure to produce his death certificate leads Sara closer to the gruesome truth about her real history. Grbavica provides viewers a glimpse into daily Croatian life, by finessing tragedy and comedy into one story. Potential pitfalls, such as Sara’s involvement with a gun-toting boy at school, are narrowly averted to prove real resilience. Grbavica is a tale that represents women and children affected by war, in their loss and strengthened love that promotes healing. –Trinie Dalton

Professional wrestling star the Rock, who was such a lump of flesh in The Scorpion King, proves surprisingly light on his feet in The Rundown, demonstrating charm and humor as well as the requisite toughness. Beck (the Rock), a repo-man for deadbeats, is sent to South America to find a treasure hunter (Seann William Scott) who’s seeking a priceless golden idol–which the local head honcho (Christopher Walken) would like to get his hands on as well. Add in the lovely but dangerous barmaid with a secret (Rosario Dawson), and Beck has some obstacles to overcome. The plot of The Rundown isn’t anything special, but the script is enjoyably clever and reasonably coherent; the capable cast keeps things lively; and the movie’s relaxed but sinewy pace sets it apart from the frantic floundering of recent action flicks–kudos to director Peter Berg (Very Bad Things). The stylish opening credits–featuring wisps of smoke curling sensually up and sideways–declare The Girl’s intentions: This is going to be a modern film noir in which compulsive passions lead to violence and disaster. The narrator, dressed in the chic lesbian butch uniform of a dark two-piece suit and a crisp white shirt, has become obsessed with a femme nightclub singer with rapturous long curly hair, known only as the Girl. Despite the Girl’s initial reluctance, the two begin an affair, only to have it threatened by a vicious nightclub owner, who feels that the singer is his property. Don’t watch The Girl expecting a driving plot; the movie circles around its lovers, letting their evasive conversations and steamy lovemaking (The Girl features a lot of nudity and some fairly explicit sex) tell the tale. The actors and the cinematography are gorgeous. –Bret Fetzer
