Learn Chinese - But Which Dialect?

Whilst I specifically learn Mandarin, the standard dialect of Chinese that most people speak, different regions have different dialects. The differences between some are really not too big (e.g. Beijing Chinese and Singapore Chinese) but others are almost a completely different language altogether (e.g. Mandarin and Cantonese). Some dialects are only spoken, and use mainstream Chinese characters for writing with. It’s best to target your dialect to where you think you’ll visit. For Hong Kong and Macau you’ll probably want to learn Cantonese instead of Mandarin. Whilst most people in these regions learn basic Chinese Mandarin, you’ll find that you can communicate a whole lot more effectively in the real local language. If you just want to learn Chinese for the fun of it, learn Mandarin for sure.

Do I have to learn characters?

No! The beauty of learning Chinese nowadays is the presence of Hanyu Pinyin, or Pinyin for short. If you just want to learn spoken Chinese, there’s still some writing involved, but you won’t be writing characters. Hanyu Pinyin is the international standard for romanisation of Chinese characters. Pinyin was invented to help foreigners learn Chinese and occasionally school children learn it as well - however most Chinese will not understand you if you try to write Pinyin - they associate characters with the sounds that we would associate to the romanised Pinyin. Cover the surface with plastic wrap and chill for 1-2 hours. Serve over tortilla chips with Lime wedges. Salad will mix as you serve it.

2 - 4 lbs. Venison Roast

3 med. Red or White Potatoes

1 Onion

2 Cloves Crushed Garlic

3 Carrots

2 Tbsp Flour

2 Beef bouillon Cubes

Smoky Jalapeño Rub

Smoky Mesquite Salt

2 - 3 Cups Water

1 Lg. Reynolds Cook n Bag

This recipe is especially handy when you’re feeding a crowd. Just unwrap the corn and you’re good to go!

Taco Salad

1 can black beans 15oz rinsed and drained

1 can refried beans 15oz heated

2-3 cps Cooked Meat chicken, beef or pork, shredded or ground

4 cp shredded lettuce

1 lg tomato; chopped

1 1/2 cps shredded Cheddar or Monterey jack cheese

1/4 c whole pitted black olives

1/4 c green onion chopped

1/2 red onion separated into rings

1 lime quartered

1 avocado peeled and sliced

1/2 c dairy sour cream

1 can chopped mild green chilies 4oz drained

10-15 pickled jalapeños slices more if you like hot

2 cloves garlic; minced

1 Tbsp Smoky Jalapeño Rub

2 Tbsp Beyond the Border

2 tsp Lemon Lime salt

1 bag tortilla chips yellow corn

No need to pass around all of the butter and salt & pepper it’s already done!

Sprinkle Smoky Jalapeño Rub on all sides and ends of roast. Lightly sprinkle with Smoky Mesquite Salt, remember it’s a salt. Put 2 Tbsp flour into Cook n’ Bag, add roast close top and shake to distribute flour over roast, set aside. Wash and cut potatoes, onion and carrots into ¼’s add to bag, add garlic crushed & chopped, pour 2cups water, careful not to wash off all of your seasoning on roast, add bouillon cubes Close bag with tie provided. Cut slits in bag about 2″- 3″ below tie closure, place bag in 9″ x 11″ baking pan. Bake @ 375 degrees until desired doneness. Remove from oven. Remove bag from pan when cool enough hold at top of bag. Hold over sauce pan, poke 1 hole in bottom of bag, let juice drain into pan. Put bag back in pan and back into oven w/heat off to keep warm. Place pan on stove bring to medium boil meanwhile mix 2-3 Tbsp. Flour or corn starch into 1/2 cup cold water stir till smooth. Stir gravy rapidly while slowly adding flour/water mixture cook to desired thickness. Slice Roast put on platter surround w/ potatoes, carrots and onions serve gravy on the side.

But in the face of global competition, China’s local chocolate companies have been further suppressed down the value chain.

It plans to build the Suzhou factory into the largest among its 38 factories globally, and achieve a 6-fold sales increase in the next five years via the Suzhou factory’s high capacity. “We hope we can fully utilise this factory’s capacity to rapidly increase output from 25,000 tons to 75,000 tons, making it the world’s largest chocolate factory,” said Barry Callebaut CEO Patrick De Maeseneire.

In recent years, the global chocolate market has notably slowed down, with only 2-3% growth per annum. This is mainly because per capita chocolate consumption in developed countries is already at a high level, averaging 11 kg. On the other hand, China’s per capita chocolate consumption is only 0.1 kg, and its domestic chocolate market has been growing at a staggering 10-15% per year, with an estimated market potential of US$2.7 billion. Thus China has become the world’s second biggest chocolate market only behind the US. The world’s top 20 chocolate companies have all entered China, and there are more than 70 imported or JV chocolate brands in today’s Chinese market.

Although the rapidly growing Chinese chocolate market is good news for its local chocolate companies, Chinese consumers today are frequently referring to foreign brands such as Dove, Cadbury, Hershey’s and Ferrero but seldom mentioning local brands.

China’s Chocolate Market Dominated by Foreign Brands

It is understood that Barry Callebaut’s new plant in Suzhou will become the company’s Asia-Pacific headquarter, as well as a sales network centre for serving China and multinational food manufacturers and specialised customers. In fact, even before the arrival of Barry Callebaut, China’s local chocolate companies had already been losing market shares to multinational competitors. The US Hershey’s has determined to plough the Chinese market, planning to achieve 23% share of the local market by 2010 and the runner-up position in China. Meanwhile, Korean and Japanese chocolate producers are also accelerating their entry into the Chinese market.

As a foreign product, China only has a chocolate manufacturing history of less than 50 years, so there is inevitable gap behind foreign brands in terms of production techniques and technologies. Due to inappropriate processing equipment and incomplete production facilities, product quality assurance is difficult for many local chocolate companies. Furthermore, most Chinese chocolate companies are weak in product R&D, resulting in slow product changes and updates. At present, most local chocolate companies are stuck in an embarrassing situation of low product quality.

Local companies not in the local market

The above industry issues have costed local companies’ opportunities to participate in the competition for the Chinese chocolate market. Multinational chocolate brands have come to the Chinese market one by one since the 1990s, and now they are in a dominant market position. With their considerable financial power, multinationals can play their technological and cultural cards, as well as promoting their premium quality and unique tastes, to rapidly capture the Chinese market.

Certainly in the eye of the British buyer, there is a false expectation that the low pound will cause property prices to fall in Mallorca (Majorca).  This is not the case and in fact, in 2007, prices in Mallorca (Majorca) continued to rise and our own data for 2008 shows that prices remain stable.  The reason, well, there are plenty of buyers in the Euro zone who are unaffected by the exchange rate.  At the end of the day, we cannot influence the exchange rate, but we must accept that this might be where the rate is going to remain for the medium term.

On a 200.000,00 EURO loan equivalent, there is a monthly saving of over 370,00 EUROS with a Multi Currency Mortgage taken out in Japanese YEN with respect to a standard EURO mortgage with similar terms and conditions.  In fact, even for the British buyer, this saving actually negates the weakness of the POUND (GBP) in the sense that, if the Pound were tracking at around the 1.45 EUROS rate, your monthly repayment would still be higher if you have a conventional EURO / EURIBOR mortgage.

In terms of costs, to arrange a mortgage in Mallorca (Majorca) , the provision of funds is about the same at 3.5% of the loan amount.  As well as an independent bank valuation of the property, there is generally a 1% arrangement fee, 1.6% stamp duty on the total loan risk as well as the notary and the land registry to be paid.  This is true for both Multi Currency mortgages as well as traditional Capital Repayment mortgages in Euros.

Buying a property in Mallorca (Majorca) is not a priority in most peoples minds at the moment.  With constant news bombardments about the “credit crunch” and the looming “recession” and the rising price of oil to list but a few negative factors, this comes as no surprise.

Buying Property in Mallorca is Still Possible Despite the Crunch

Essentially, they allow you to borrow the capital in a currency other than EURO from a choice of either US Dollars (USD), Swiss Francs (CHF) or Japanese Yen (JPY).  Instead of the interest being charged on EURIBOR which is currently on the increase, the base rate that the bank is using is the LIBOR rate for that given currency, on a monthly variable basis.  And that is where the bulk of the saving is.  The monthly LIBOR Rate for Japanese Yen (JPY) is in the 0.7% region roughly 3 percentage points cheaper than the monthly EURIBOR Rate.

Now this product is not without risk and is certainly not for everyone, especially not those who are at the limit of their budget.  There are two varying factors that can fluctuate and influence the repayment amount every month: the EUR/JPY rate (or EUR/USD, EUR/CHF).  If you are a British buyer, add a third element, the GBP/EUR rate.  The beauty of the product is that there is the facility to change the currency of the loan during the term.  The “safer” currency being the Swiss Franc (CHF) where there is more stability against the EURO although subsequently, the saving is also less although it does offer peace of mind.  Furthermore, you can also revert back to EURO / EURIBOR should you wish.

So, if prices are not falling and if there are mortgage products that are cheaper than the traditional capital repayment, why would you not buy now?  If you don’t, it may be that the market recovers before you realize and we start seeing the 5% to 18% price increases that we have had in the past and the property you want becomes even more expensive.
