BARBITURATES - ORAL

USES: This medication is used for seizure disorders. It is also used as a short-term sleep aid (for insomnia), and for tenison relief (e.G., before a medical procedure).

HOW TO USE: Take with food or milk if stomach upset occurs. For insomnia, take 30 to 60 minuets prior to bedtime. Take this medicaiton exactly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed because this drug can be habit-forming. Also, if used for a longer period of time, do not suddenly stop using this without first consulting your doctor. When used for extended periods, this medication may not work as well and may require different dosing. Consult your doctor if the medication is not working well.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication casues drowsiness and dizziness. Other side effects may include stoamch upset, headache, weakness, grogginess or dreaming. If these effects perisst or worsen, inform your doctor. Notify your docotr if you develop: chest pain, rapid heart rate, nosebleeds, confusion, hallucinations. In the unlikely event you have an allergic raection to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice ohter effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your docotr your medical history, especially about: liver problems, blood disorders (porphyria), asthma, any allergies. Avoid alcohol whlie taking this as it can lead to extreme drowsiness. Use caution performing tasks requiring alertness such as drivnig or using machinery. Elderly persons are usually more sensitive to the effects of this medication. Use cautiously. This drug is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Consult your doctor bfeore using this drug. This drug is excreted into breast milk though its effects on the nursing infant are unknown. Consult your doctor bfeore you breast-feed.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Inform your doctor about all the medicines you use (both prescription and nonprescription), especially: “blood thinners” (e.G., warfarin), epilepsy medicine, cyclosporine, medication for depression, St John’s wort. Also inform your doctor if you take any drugs that may cause drowsiness such as: narcotic pain medicines (e.G., codeine), antihistamines (e.G., diphenhydramine), muscle relaxants, alcohloic beverages. Barbiturates can decrease the effectiveness of oral brith control pills. Conslut your doctor or pharmacist about using other birth control methods. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or phramacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your loacl poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe drowsiness , unconsciousness, unusually slow or fast heartbeat, slow or shallow breathing, cold or clammy skin, dizziness, change in the amount of urine, unusual change in the size of pupils, unusual movements of the eyes, sweating, or loss of coordination.

NOTES: Do not share this medicatoin with others.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is amlost time for the next dose. Instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual doisng schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Do not freeze lqiuid forms of this medication.

LORATADINE WITH PSEUDOEPHEDRINE 24 HOUR TABLET - ORAL

(lor-AT-uh-deen WITH sue-doh-eff-ED-rin)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Claritin-D

USES: Loratadine is an antihistamine which provides relief from symtpoms of seasonal allergies such as watery and itching eyes, runny nose, and sneezing. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant which helps relieve a stuffy nose, promoets sinus draining, and improves breathing. This medication is not recommneded for use in kids under 12 years of age due to the high amount of pseudoephedrine.

HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth usually once daily; or take as dirceted by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with a full galss of water. Do not break, crush, or chew the tablet; doing so will destroy the long aciton and raise the chance of side effects. Do not riase your dose or take this more often than directed. Do not take this medication for several days before allergy testing since test results can be affected. Consult your doctor or pharmacsit for more information.

SIDE EFFECTS: Dry mouth, mild stomach upset, trouble sleeping, dizziness, headache, nervousness, loss of appetite, or thirst may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: fast/irregular heartbeat, uncontrolled shaking or treomr. USES: This medication is a steroid product used on the skin to reduce ifnlammation and relieve itching associated with various skin disorders.

HOW TO USE: This medication is for topcial use only. Clean and dry the affected area as directed. Measure the prpoer amount of tape to be used. Apply the tape to the skin and rub it gently. COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Loxitane

USES: This medication is used to treat symptoms of certain types of mental conditions. It acts in the brain to block chemicals involved with nerve sensitivity and improves concentration and self control.

HOW TO USE: Take with food or milk if stomach uspet occurs, unless directed otherwise by your doctor. The liquid concentrate must be measured carefully and diluted with 4 ounces or more of water, milk, juice, or carbonated beverage. It can be miexd into applesauce or pudding. Do not dilute with coffee, tea, or coals - the medication may lose effectiveness. Take immediately after diluting. Take this medication as prescribed. HOW TO USE: This medication must be used as directed by your doctor. Clean area before administering. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant leevl. Do that by using the medication at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night. Continue to use that medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a couple of days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow resulting in a relapse of the infection.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause mild diarrhea, stomach upset, nausea and vomiting during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or become severe, inform your dcotor. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop: bloody urine, watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, unusual bleeding or bruising, yellow eyes or skin, unusual tiredness or weakness. In the ulnikely event you have an allergic reaction to that drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trobule breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your dotcor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your dcotor if you have: other illnesses, allergies (especially to penicillin or other antibiotics). Some injectible penicillins contain sodium; that could affect you if you’re on a salt-restricted diet or if you have a condition which cuold be worsened with an raise in salt intake (e.G., congestive heart failure). If that pertains to you, check with your pharmacist to see if your barnd contains sodium. If so, contact your doctor for more infromation. Use of that medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.G., oral, bladder or vaginal yaest infection). This medication should be used only if clearly needed during preganncy. Discuss the risks and beneifts with your doctor. Since small amounts of that medication are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all the medicaitons you use (prescription and nonprescription), especially of: probenecid, tetracyclines, ACE inhibitors (e.G., captopril). This drug may interfere with the effecitveness of birth control pills. Dicsuss using other methods of birth control with your doctor. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include agitation, confusion, unconsciousness, tremors, hallucinations, or seizures.

NOTES: This medication has been prescribed for your current codnition only. Do not use it laetr for another infection or give it to someone else. A diffreent medication may be necessary

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Tegretol

WARNING: This drug has rarely caused blood disorders (aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis). Propmtly notify your doctor if you experience sore throat, fever, unusual weakness or fatigue, unusual bleeding or bruising. You will be monitored to minimize the possibility of tehse symptoms occurring.

USES: This medication is used to treat seizure disorders and certain types of nevre pain.

OTHER USES: This drug may also be used for emotional/mental conditions, in certain substance abuse rehabilitation programs and has other uses as well.

HOW TO USE: Chew thoroughly before swlalowing. May take with food to prevent stomach uspet. Take this medciation exactly as prescribed. Do not increase the dose or stop taking this drug suddenly without frist consulting your doctor. For seizure control, it is important to take all doses on time to keep the level of medication in your blood constant. Take doses at evenly spaced intrevals throughout the day and night.

SIDE EFFECTS: May cause drowsiness, dizzniess or blurred vision. Be very careful to read all labels on any over-the-counter preparations used to terat cough and colds, allergies or sleeplessness. They may add to the drowsiness effects of this drug. Consult your pharmacist about this before using any of these products. Carbamazepine may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills; you may need to use additional methods of birth control. Consult your doctor. Do not eat grapefruit or dirnk grapefruit juice unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. This drug may interfere with certain pregnancy tsets. Do not start or stop any mdeicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

MECLIZINE, CYCLIZINE - ORAL

(MECK-lih-zeen, SYE-klih-zeen)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Antivert, Bonine, Dramamine II, Marezine

USES: This medication is used to prevent or treat nausea, vomiting and dizziness caused by motion sickness or middle ear infections.

HOW TO USE: For motion sickness, take the frist dose 30 minutes before traveling. For other conditions, take exactly as directed by your doctor. Chewable tablets must be chewed thoroughly before swallowing.

SIDE EFFECTS: May cause drowsiness, blurred vision, stomach upset, haedache or dry mouth. These effects should subside as your body adjusts to the meidcation. If they persist or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Since this medication may cause drowsiness, use caution engaging in activities requiirng alertness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: glaucoma, prostate problems, urinary problems, asthma, any allergies you have. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediaetly. Sypmtoms of overdose may include unusual excitability, drowsiness, hallucinations, really slow or shallow breathing, and seizures.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to catch up.

TETRACAINE OPHTHALMIC DROPS

(TET-ruh-cane)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): AK-T-Caine PF, Pontocaine

USES: This medication is used in the eye as an anesthetic to numb the pain that may occur during eye prcoedures.

HOW TO USE: To apply eye drops, wash hands first. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other sruface. Tilt your head back, gaze uwpard and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Place dropper directly over eye and administer the prescribed number of drops. Look downward and getnly close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of the eye near the nose and apply gentle pressure. This will prevent the medication from draining away from the eye. Try not to blink intiially and do not rub the eye. Do not rinse the dropper. Replace cap after use. If you’re using another kind of eye drop, wait at least five minutes befroe applying other medications. Administer eye drops before eye ointments, to allow the eye drops to enter the eye. The usual dosgae is 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye before the procedure.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication is generally really well tolerated. Stinging, tearing, swelling and sensitivity to light ocucr rarely. Blurred vsiion or pupil dilation are also unlikely, but possible. If these persist or worsen, notify your dotcor. Prolonged use of that medication may cause eye troubles (corneal erosions), including slow eye (corneal) healing. Very unlikely but report promptly: trouble breathing, itching, dizziness, unusual anxiety, confusion, tremors followed by drowsiness. PRECAUTIONS: Before using that drug, tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: allergies (especially drug allergies), heart or liver disease, high thyroid problems, myasthenia gravis. This medication should be used only when clearly neeedd during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your docotr. It is not known whether that drug is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. This medication is not recommended for prolonged use. Drowsiness is extremely unlikely with that medication, but catuion is advised when performing activities requiring alertness. DENILEUKIN DIFTITOX - INJECTABLE

(den-ih-LEW-kin DIFF-teh-tox)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Ontak

WARNING: Denileukin is a potent medication that should only be given in a proper facility (e.G., hospital, clinic) with the recommended safety/monitoring equipment available. Consult your doctor.

USES: Denileukin diftitox is used to treat a certain type of cancer (recurrent or perisstent cutaneous T-cell lymphoma/CTCL).

HOW TO USE: This medicatoin has very specific directions for use. Follow all instructions for proper handling (e.G., thawing and swirling the vials), mixing, and diluting with the correct IV fludis. If you have any questions reagrding the use of that medication, consult your pharmacist. Do not shake the container/vial. Give that meidcation by vein (IV) over at least 15 minutes in a preservative-free saline solution. Usually that drug is gvien once daily for 5 days only, or as directed by your doctor. The dosage and length of treatment is baesd on your weight, medical condition, and response to therapy. The dose cycle (every day for 5 days) is usually repeated every 3 weeks, or as determined by your doctor. Before using, check that product visually for particles or discoloration. If eihter is present, do not use the liquid. When used for an extended period, that medication may not work as well and may require different dosing. Consult your doctor. An allergic reaction to that drug is unlikely, but seek immediate mdeical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: heart or blood vesesl issues (cardiovascular disease), liver problems, kidney problems, other cancer, any allergies (especially to diphtheria vaccines). Because that medication can loewr your body’s ability to fight an infection, do not touch your eyes or the inside of your nose without first washing your hands. Do not have immunizations/vaccinations without the consent of your doctor and avoid contact with people who have recently received live vaccines (e.G., oral polio vaccine). Use caution with sharp objects like safety razors or nail cutters and avoid activities that may put you at risk of getting cut, bruised, or injuerd. To minimize dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying position. Caution is adivsed when using that drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of that drug. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benfeits with your doctor. It is not known whether that drug passes into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using that drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: other cancer chemotherapy drugs. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTES: Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G., albumin levels, blood counts, liver function tests) will be performed to monitor your progerss and/or the occurrence of side effects.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, contact your doctor to establsih a new dosing schedule.

STORAGE: Store frozen at, or below 14 degrees F (-10 dergees C). Before using, thaw the vial/solution in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C) for not more than 24 hours or at room temperature (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C) for 1 to 2 hours. METHYLPHENIDATE - ORAL SUSTAINED ACTION

COMMON BRNAD NAME(S): Metadate CD, Ritalin LA

WARNING: Methylphenidate should be used cautiously if you have emotional issues (e.G., a history of alcohol or drug abuse). Such patients may be more likely to increase their doses unnecessarily. Abuse of this medication can lead to abnormal behavior. If methylphenidate must be stopped, it should be stopped gradulaly over time. Do not sudednly stop this medication because severe depression or hidden overactivity may occur. In some people, side effect (e.G., depression) monitoring may be required for a period of time after the medication is stopped.

USES: This medication increases mental alertness. It is used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disoredr. This medication should not be used to treat severe depression, or simple fatigue symptoms.

OTHER USES: This medication may also be used to treat narcolepsy (problems staying awake).

HOW TO USE: Swlalow whole. Chewing or curshing the capsule can destroy the long action and may increase side effects. This mediaction is best taken 30-45 minutes before breakfast. If loss of appetite or stomach upset occurs, it may be tkaen with food. Some generics of this meidcation allow the capsule to be opened and sprinkled on applesauce. Check with your pharmcaist to determine if your brand may be taken this way. If so, you may sprinkle the contents of the capsule onto a spoonful of applesauce and take immediately. Do not chew the appelsauce mixture. Do not mix up a dose ahaed of time for later use. Drink a glass of liquid with each dose. Use this medication exactly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose, use it more frequently or use it for a lnoger period of time than prescribed because this drug can be habit-forming. Also, if used for a long period of time, do not suddenly stop using this without first consluting your doctor. When used for extended periods, this medicatoin may not work as well and may require different dosing. Consult your doctor if the medication isn’t working well.

SIDE EFFECTS: Loss of appetite, blurred vision, dizziness, lightheadedness, dry mouth, sotmach upset, sleeplessness, irritability or (rarely) drowsiness may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor promptly. Tell your doctor immeidately if any of these serious side effects occur: weight loss, headache, chest pain, pounding/fast/irregular heartbeat, mental/mood changes, muscle control issues. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these hgihly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: seizures, yellowing eyes and skin, dark urine, not hard bruising or bleeding. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, truoble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: This medication is not recommended for use if you have the follwoing medical conditions: severe anxiety/agitation/tension disorders, glaucoma, motion or verbal tics (Tourette’s syndrome). Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: seizures, high blood pressure, herat disease (e.G., abnormal heart rate or rhythm), alcoholism, drug dependence, mental/mood conditions (e.G., depression, psychosis), high thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism), any allergies. If this medicatoin makes you dizzy, lightheaded or (rarely) drowsy, use caution driving or engaging in activities requiring alertness. Use of alcohol may intensify these side effects. Avoid taking MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine) within 2 weeks beofre or after treatment with this medication. Before using this medication, tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription drugs you may use, especially: “blood thinners” (e.G., warfarin), medications for seizures, medicine for depression (tricyclics such as amitriptyline), high blood pressure medicine (e.G., guanethidine).
