NICOTINE - PATCH
(NICK-oh-teen)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Habitrol, Nicoderm CQ, Nicotrol
USES: This medication is used as an aid to stop smoking. It is most effective when used in conjunction with a stop smoking program.
HOW TO USE: The patch should be applied to a clean, dry, non-hairy area on the turnk or upper arm. Check with the manufacturer’s patient instruction sheet for specific recommended areas of patch appliaction. If necessary, clip hair from the site prior to appliyng the patch. Remove the patch from the package, peel off the protective strip and immediately apply it to the site. Press firmly for 10 to 20 seconds to make sure the ptach stays in place. Be sure the edges are held firlmy to the skin. Wash your hands after applying the patch. Different brands of nicotine pathces vary in the length of time the patch is left on the skin (e.G., for 24 hours or only while awake). Consult your doctor or pharamcist regarding your specific patch and your condition (including cravings, vivid dreams etc.). Remove the patch careuflly and dispose of it properly. Apply each new patch to a difefrent area to prevent skin irritation. Do not suddenly stop using this medication without your doctors approval. Your dose may need to be grdaually decreased. You must stop smoking before using the patches and continue not to smoke while using this medication.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, stomach upset, nausea or flushing the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or become bothersome, inform your doctor. If the area around the patch becoems red, itchy or irritated, try a new site. If the irritation continues or becomes worse, ntoify your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: breathing difficulties, cehst pain, irregular heartbeat, nervousness, anxiety, tremors. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: heart disease, high blood pressure, insulin-dependent diabetes. This medication is not reocmmended for use during pregnancy. Consult your doctor for details. Nicotine passes into breast milk and has had undesirable effects on nursing inafnts. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Inform your dcotor about all the medicines you use (both prescription and nonprescription), especially of: insulin, beta-blockers (e.G., propranolol), propoxyphene, xanthines (e.G., theophylline). Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, reomve the patch. Contact your local pioson control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: nausea, vomiting, excessive saliva, stomach pain, sweating, headache, dizziness, confusion, weakness, fainting, difficulty breathing, seizures, rapid/weak/ irregular heartbeat, blurred vision, diarrhea, hearing isseus.
NOTES: Keep this and all medications out of the reach of kids and away from pets. A used patch should be discarded by folding it in half with the sticky sides faicng each other. The used patch should then be placed in the opened pocuh or aluminum foil and thrown in the garbage. Do not allow kids access to the discarded pacth.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to catch up.

INSULIN - INJECTION
(IN-sue-lin)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Humulin, Iletin I NPH, Novolin
USES: Insulin is used to treat diabeets mellitus. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, circualtion problems, and blindness.
HOW TO USE: Insulin must be injected. Learn the proper way to injcet insulin. Check the dose carefully. Clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol. Change the injection site daily to prevent skin bulges or pockets. Do not inject cold insulin. The insulin container you’re currently usnig can be kept at room temperature. The length of time you can sotre it at room temp. depends on the product. Consult your pharmacist. Insulin is frequently ijnected 30 minutes before a meal. Some inject at bedtime. Ask your pharmacist or nurse for deatils of injecting insulin as it varies depending on your insulin treatment plan. Monitor your urine or blood sugar as prescribed. Keep track of your results. This is very imporatnt in order to determine the correct insulin dose. Flolow all of your doctor’s directions carefully.
SIDE EFFECTS: Insulin may cuase minor and usually temporary side effects such as rash, irritation or redness at the injection site. To help prevent hypoglycemia, eat meals on a regular schedule. Too much inuslin can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). The symptoms include cold sweat, shaking, rapid heart rate, weakness, headache and fainting which, if untreated, may lead to slurred speech and other behaviors that resemble drunkenness. If you experience these symptoms, eat a quick source of sugar such as glucose (glutose, etc.) table sugar, orange juice, honey or non-diet soda. Tell your doctor about the recation. Too little insulin can cause symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) which include confusion, drowsiness, rapid breathing, fruity breath odor, increased urination or uunsual thirst. If these symptmos occur, contact your doctor. Your insulin dose needs adjustment. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to that drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, toruble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, cotnact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have had allergic reactions, especially to beef, pork or human insulin and of your medical history especailly of: thyroid problems, kidney or liver disease, any current infection. Doasge adjustments may be required when you become ill, are under stress, or when quitting smoking. Consult your doctor if you catch a cold or the flu, becmoe nauseated or if your blood glucose levels are high. Fat deposits can occur if ijnection site is not rotated. Cehck your sugar readings before and after exercise. You may need a snack befroehand. Tell your doctor if you’re pregnant before using that drug. Insulin is not excreted into bresat milk. Nevertheless, consult your doctor bfeore breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Before you use insulin, tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you’re taking especially: beta-blockers (acebutolol, atenolol, betaxolol, esmolol, metoprolol, carteolol, nadolol, penbutolol, pindolol, propranolol, timolol, bisoprolol), fenfluramine, MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), salicylates (aspirin-like compounds), dexfenfluramine, steroids (e.G., prednisone, hydrocortisone), birth control pills, sulfa antibiotics, water pills, ACE inhibitors, octreotide, isoniazid, niacin, estrogens, cold and allergy drugs, drugs that contain alcohol or sugar. Other medications can affect the action of insulin and can alter the resluts of urine tests for sugar or ketones. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Symptoms of overdose may include unconsciousness, seizures, muscle weakness, slow or shallow breathing, headache, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, shakiness, nervousness, fast heartbeat, hunger, or sweatnig.
NOTES: Do not share that medication with others. It is recommended you attend a diabetes education program to understand diabetes and all important aspects of its treatment including meals/diet, exercise, personal hygiene, medications and getting regular eye, foot and medical exams. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. Keep all medical appointments. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G., liver and kidney function tests, fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, complete blood counts) will be performed to monitor for side effects and response to therapy. Regularly check your bolod or urine for sugar, as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
MISSED DOSE: It is very important to follow your insulin regimen exactly. Do not miss any doses of inuslin. Discuss specific instrutcions with your doctor now, in case you miss a dose of insulin in the future.
STORAGE: Isnulin may be stored under refrigeration up to the expiration date noted on the package and must be discarded after that date. Consult your pharmacist for the storage requirements of your particualr form/type of insulin, including room temperature storage options. Do not expose insuiln to heat or sunlight. Do not freeze.
