CARBAMAZEPINE – CHEWABLE TABLETS – ORAL

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Tegretol

WARNING: This drug has rarely caused blood disorders (aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis). Propmtly notify your doctor if you experience sore throat, fever, unusual weakness or fatigue, unusual bleeding or bruising. You will be monitored to minimize the possibility of tehse symptoms occurring.

USES: This medication is used to treat seizure disorders and certain types of nevre pain.

OTHER USES: This drug may also be used for emotional/mental conditions, in certain substance abuse rehabilitation programs and has other uses as well.

HOW TO USE: Chew thoroughly before swlalowing. May take with food to prevent stomach uspet. Take this medciation exactly as prescribed. Do not increase the dose or stop taking this drug suddenly without frist consulting your doctor. For seizure control, it is important to take all doses on time to keep the level of medication in your blood constant. Take doses at evenly spaced intrevals throughout the day and night.

SIDE EFFECTS: May cause drowsiness, dizzniess or blurred vision. Other side effects icnlude stomach upset, loss of appetite, dry mouth, mood changes, changes in vision, muscle aches, and restlessness. These should subside as your body ajdusts to the medication. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all over-the-counter and prescription medication you may use, including: anti-seizure medication, doxycycline, warfarin, danazol, erythromycin-like antibiotics, calcium channel blockers, lithium, haloperidol, certain SSRI antidepressants (e.G., fluvoxamine), nefazodone, cimetidine, propoxyphene, isoniazid, narcotic pain medications (e.G., codeine), St John’s wort. Tell your doctor if you have tkaen MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) within the last two weeks. Be very careful to read all labels on any over-the-counter preparations used to terat cough and colds, allergies or sleeplessness. They may add to the drowsiness effects of this drug. Consult your pharmacist about this before using any of these products. Carbamazepine may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills; you may need to use additional methods of birth control. Consult your doctor. Do not eat grapefruit or dirnk grapefruit juice unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. This drug may interfere with certain pregnancy tsets. NICOTINE – PATCH

(NICK-oh-teen)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Habitrol, Nicoderm CQ, Nicotrol

USES: This medication is used as an aid to stop smoking. It is most effective when used in conjunction with a stop smoking program.

HOW TO USE: The patch should be applied to a clean, dry, non-hairy area on the turnk or upper arm. Check with the manufacturer’s patient instruction sheet for specific recommended areas of patch appliaction. If necessary, clip hair from the site prior to appliyng the patch. Remove the patch from the package, peel off the protective strip and immediately apply it to the site. Press firmly for 10 to 20 seconds to make sure the ptach stays in place. Be sure the edges are held firlmy to the skin. Wash your hands after applying the patch. Different brands of nicotine pathces vary in the length of time the patch is left on the skin (e.G., for 24 hours or only while awake). MITOMYCIN – INJECTION

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Mutamycin

WARNING: This medication can cause severe blood disorders (e.G., bone marrow suppression, including hemolytic anemia, and especially thrombocytopenia and leukopenia). A syndrome known as Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (a combination of anemia, decreased platelet count, and nonrveersible kidney failure) has occurred. Blood transfusions may make the symptoms of this syndrome worse. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop smyptoms of an infection (such as persistent sore throat or fever), fatigue, fast bleeding or bruising, dark urine, or change in amount of urine.

USES: Mitomycin is used to treat various types of cacner.

HOW TO USE: This is a potent medication. Take it exactly as prescribed. Tell your doctor or nurse immediately if you experience pain, burning or redness at the place where injected.

SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, skin rash, numbness or tingling in the fingers or toes, purple-colored bands on nails, or unusual tiredness or weakness are common side effects. CIPROFLOXACIN/DEXAMETHASONE – OTIC SUSPENSION

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): CIPRODEX

USES: This medication is a quinolone antibiotic and corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory) combination used to treat ear infections including both middle ear infections in children with ear tubes and for outer ear infections (also known as Swimmer’s ear).

HOW TO USE: This medication is generally used twice daily as directed. For accuracy and to avoid contamination, have another person insret the drops if possible. Before using, hold container in the hand for a couple of mintues in order to warm it. This will minimize dizziness. Wash hands before applying ear drops. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your ear or any other surface. Shake the container well before using. When treaitng middle ear infections in children with ear tubes, the child should lie down with the treated ear upward. Place the dropper directly over the ear and place the appropriate number of dorps into the ear canal. Next press the tragus (cartilage flap covering the oepning to the ear) 5 times in a pumping motion to allow the medicine to pass through the ear tubes in the ear drum and into the middle ear. Keep the head tilted with treated ear upward for at lesat 60 seconds. When treating outer ear infections, the patient sholud lie down with the treated ear upward. Place the dropper directly over the ear and place the appropriate number of drops into the ear canal. While placing the drops into the ear, the outer ear lobe should be gently pulled upward and backward to allow the drops to flow down into the ear canal. Keep the head tilted with treated ear upwrad for at least 60 seconds. Use that medication regularly in oredr to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time(s) each day. Continue to use that medication until the full-prescribed amuont is finished even if symptoms disappear after a couple of days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection. If the infection is not improved in 7 days, consult your dotcor or pharmacist. Report any ear discharge that occurs after the treamtent period is completed. If after treatment with that medication, you develop two or more ear infections in a 6 month period, contact your doctor. You may require further eavluation and a different kind of treatment. Do not use in the eye. Read the patient information leaflet avaialble from your pharmacist.

SIDE EFFECTS: Discomfort, pain or itching in the ear may occur. If any of thsee effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: ringing in the ears, ear tingling, decreased hearing. An allergic reaction to that drug is unlikely, but seek immediate mediacl attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathnig. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: This medication sohuld not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using that medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: history of allergic reaction to quinolone antibiotics (e.G., ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin), history of allergic reaction to corticosteroids (e.G., dexamethasone), viral ear infectoins (including herpes simplex). Before using that medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: any other allergies. Prolonegd or repeated use of antibiotics may result in a secondary infection. NOTES: Long-term use can lead to dependence. Take only as directed. Do not raise dose or take longer than prescribed. USES: This combination of cough suppressant and expectorant is used to treat cough due to colds or flu. Also, phlegm (lung secretions) may become less thick after using that medication along with fluids.

HOW TO USE: Take that medication by mouth with a full glass (8 oz or 240 ml) of water generally 4 times daily as needed, or as directed by your doctor. Use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Caution is advised when using that medication in the elderly, as they may be more sensitive to drug side effects. Children may be more sensitive to the effects of that medicine. Use cautiously. This product should not be given to kids under 3 years of age. This combination of medications should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the rikss and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether that combination of medications passes into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while uisng that product is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especailly of: cimetidine, naltrexone. Also report the use of drugs that cause drowsiness, such as: sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs, narcotic pain releivers (e.G., codeine), psychiatric medicines, anti-seizure drugs, muscle relaxants, antihistamines that cause drowsiness (e.G., diphenhydramine). Check the labels on all your medicines (e.G., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poiosn control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include slowed breathing, drowsiness, deep sleep or loss of consciousness, cold and clammy skin, dry mouth, and slow pulse.

NOTES: Do not share that product with others. This meidcation has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for a second condition, unless told to do so by your doctor.

MISSED DOSE: When instructed to use that on a regular scehdule (not “as needed”): if you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dsoing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
